SPRING CLEAN: RESUME EDITION

The beginning of September marks the start of Spring which means it's the perfect time to dust off more than just your shelves. It’s time to refresh your resume.

At Belkirk, we believe your resume should reflect not just where you have been, but where you are going. Whether you're actively job hunting or simply preparing for future opportunities, a well-crafted, up-to-date resume is one of the most powerful tools in your career toolkit.

Here’s how to give your resume a thorough spring clean and create the best version yet. Your resume should be easy to read and visually clean.

  • Is the layout modern and uncluttered?

  • Have you used clear section headings, bullet points, and consistent formatting?

  • Is it too wordy? Or too sparse?

Tip: Use white space generously, it makes your resume feel breathable and focused.

2. Update Your Career Summary

This section is your elevator pitch. In 3–4 lines, clearly state:

  • Who you are professionally

  • Your strengths

  • The value you bring

  • What you're looking for next

Don’t let this become generic. Tailor it to your current direction.

3. Cut What No Longer Serves You

If it’s not relevant to where you’re headed, it may be time to let it go. Consider removing:

  • Outdated software or systems

  • Early-career roles that don’t add value

  • High school achievements (unless you're a recent grad)

Think of this as decluttering your career closet. Make space for what truly matters.

4. Add Recent Wins and Metrics

Employers want to see results, not just responsibilities.

Ask yourself:

  • What did I achieve in this role?

  • Can I attach a number to it?

Examples:

  • “Improved client retention by 15% year-on-year.”

  • “Delivered 12+ residential projects on time and within budget.”

These make your impact real and memorable.

5. Tailor Your Resume for Your Industry

Spring is not the time for a one-size-fits-all approach.

If you're in property, construction, corporate services or development, your resume should:

  • Highlight relevant projects or portfolios

  • Include technical tools or industry-specific software

  • Reflect your understanding of Melbourne or QLD market trends, if applicable

6. Include Soft Skills Backed by Action

Skills like communication, leadership and adaptability are valuable but don’t just list them. Prove them.

Instead of:

“Strong communicator”

Say:

“Led weekly team meetings across departments, improving workflow and clarity.”

This shows, rather than tells.

7. Don’t Forget the Final Touches

Before hitting send:

  • Triple-check grammar and spelling

  • Convert to PDF

  • Name your file professionally (e.g. FirstName_LastName_Resume.pdf)

  • Ensure your contact info is current

  • Match your resume with your LinkedIn profile

  • Get someone else to proofread it ... fresh eyes will make all the difference!

Bonus: Wellness Tip While You Edit

Resume updates can feel overwhelming. Don’t try to perfect it in one sitting. Break it down into sections, give yourself short work sprints, and take breaks, go for a walk, sip your coffee outdoors, or open a window. Fresh air will give you a fresh perspective!

Whether you’re applying for your next job, preparing for a promotion, or just keeping things current, our team can help you put your best page forward.
